Many online store owners believe that the more products they have, the more sales they will generate.
This is logical thinking on the surface... but if we look closely, we find that too many products sometimes does more harm than good!
The real question here is:
How many products are enough for your store? And when do you reach the point where you need to stop and reorganize your portfolio?
1. Too many products can confuse customers.
Imagine entering an online store with over 1,000 products, without clear organization or convenient categories...
What happens?
You close the page and leave!
Customers don't like to browse around...they want to find what they're looking for easily and quickly.
If your products are numerous but unorganized, you'll lose many customers without realizing it.
2. You don't need more than 10 to 20 products to start with.
If you're just starting out, don't overburden yourself.
Start with a small number of unique products and focus on quality and experience.
Monitor the performance of your products and see what's popular and what's not in demand.
Then you start expanding slowly, adding products based on data, not randomly.
3. When do you start adding additional products?
If you notice that your customers keep asking:
• "Do you have another color?"
• "Isn't there another model at the same price?"
• "Why don't you offer such-and-such a model?"
This is when you know it's the right time to expand.
But expand smartly, for example:
• Add complementary products (such as phone cases).
• Add different options for the same product (colors, sizes).
• Don't repeat the same idea in ten different versions; stay focused.
4. A large number requires strong management.
If you have 50 products, it's not enough to just upload them to the store... You must:
• Describe them accurately.
• Track inventory.
• Update prices.
• Review orders.
• Respond to customer inquiries.
Every new product means additional work for you or your team.
If you're not prepared to manage this volume, you'll get bogged down in the details and neglect the basics.
5. Be smart with categories and filtering.
If you have a large number of products, that's not a problem... but the most important thing is to organize them well.
Use clear categories such as:
• Best Sellers
• New Products
• Products under 100 SAR
• Current Offers
And create a smart filter that helps customers easily find what they want (e.g., by color, price, size, rating).
This improves the user experience and makes the store appear professional.
6. Excessive Variety Confuses Identity
Some stores start out selling perfumes, and suddenly they sell clothing, kitchen tools, children's toys, and everything else!
The customer gets lost... they don't know the store's focus or what distinguishes it from others.
Be specific in your identity:
• If your store specializes in electronics, focus on that.
• If it's personal care, don't venture into distant areas.
The clearer your identity is, the easier it will be for customers to remember you.
7. More than 100 products = Loss
If you have 100 products, but only 15 actually sell...
You're wasting time, effort, and inventory on products that aren't generating any sales.
Review your store data periodically and delete or freeze products that aren't generating sales.
Focusing on profitable products is better than being distracted by insignificant quantities.
Not the more products you have, the more sales you'll generate...
Sometimes, a single product with a story behind it, quality, and proper marketing can generate more sales than 50 duplicate and similar products.
Think of the number of products as an "experience" you want to offer your customers, not as a random "piling."
Start right, develop slowly, and monitor your performance.
